Moulage 1
Moulage is, kort gezegd, 3D-patroonontwerp.
Je begint met een driedimensionale vorm en leert hoe je een perfect passend
papieren patroon maakt.
Handig als je kleding maakt en niet van het gereken houdt dat bij patroon tekenen
hoort.
Korte samenvatting van de lessen:
LES 1 en 2:
We beginnen met objecten; rechte en ronde vormen die steeds complexer worden.
We gaan niet meten, berekenen of tekenen, maar we gaan de vormen inpakken en
weer uitpakken.
Waar zitten de naden en waarom?
LES 3:
Je kunt de papieren patronen vervolgens gebruiken om een vorm in stof te maken.
We bespreken ook het toevoegen van naadtoeslagen en het plaatsen van de
patroondelen op de stof.
LES 4 en 5:
We werken in tweetallen; we pakken elkaar in! En natuurlijk pakken we elkaar weer
uit 😉
We maken een patroon van de resulterende vorm en werken met speciale patroon
tekenlinialen. Het doel is om een perfect passend patroon te creëren dat als basis
kan dienen voor een top, jurk, blouse, enzovoort.
LES 6:
Je maakt het patroon in een eenvoudige katoenen stof om de nauwkeurigheid te
controleren (huiswerk). In de laatste les controleren we alle lijfjes samen.

Moulage 1
Pattern Making Using the Moulage Technique
Moulage, in short, is 3D pattern making.
Starting with a three-dimensional shape, you’ll learn how to create a paper pattern that fits perfectly.
Useful if you make clothes and don’t like the math involved in pattern drafting.
Introduction
Moulage (in French) or shaping/draping (in English) is a sewing technique that involves little or no calculation and starts from the body or a mannequin (that is exactly like your body) instead of calculations on paper.
In 2017 I started a series of lessons (Moulage 1+2) based on a technique we used in costume design for theater.
I like sewing but I don’t like ill-fitting garments and have always drawn my own patterns. But not by endless calculations though.
In my opinion you get the best patterns by starting on the body of the wearer instead of a general pattern.
For theater costumes we would wrap a person in paper and tape and drew lines on the paper shape where the seems should be.
This is actually what we still do in Moulage 1 and at the end of the course you’ll have a perfect fitting basic pattern of your upper body and hips.
This basic pattern is what we use in Moulage 2 (planned later in 2026).
We will be exploring how to use and alter your pattern on jersey fabrics as well as woven textiles.
Also we will look into replacing darts and how to construct sleeves for your garments.
Most of us aren’t built according to the standard sizes of fashion magazines.
And it’s no wonder the patterns they provide usually don’t fit. Or only fit after major alterations.

Students who have completed Moulage 1 receive a substantial discount on the custom-made production of their mannequins.
Please note: this is not a course; I only make mannequins to order.
Brief Summary of the Lessons
LESSON 1 and 2:
We’ll start with objects; straight and round shapes that become increasingly complex.
We won’t be measuring, calculating, or drawing, but we’ll be wrapping and unwrapping the shapes.
Where are the seams and why?
LESSON 3:
You can then use the paper patterns to create a fabric shape.
We’ll also discuss adding seam allowances and placement on the fabric.
LESSON 4 and 5:
Working in pairs; we’ll wrap each other up! And unwrap each other again, of course 😉
We’ll create a pattern from the resulting shape and work with pattern-makers’ special rulers. The goal is to create a perfectly fitting pattern that can serve as the basis for a top, dress, blouse, and so on.
LESSON 6:
You will make the pattern in a simple cotton to check its accuracy (homework).
In the final lesson, we will check all bodices together.
